Local MP Visits Drapers’ Brookside Junior School for UK Parliament Week

This week, Drapers’ Brookside Junior School took part in UK Parliament Week, weaving themed activities and learning into the curriculum. Pupils explored what UK Parliament Week represents, what politics means for them and their community, and the role of an MP. A specially created display board, located next to the Student Council board in the school’s entrance showcased the different roles in Parliament, how laws are made, and information about their local MP.
As part of the week’s learning, the school welcomed a special visit from local MP Julia Lopez. Her visit supported the school’s aim of helping children understand how decisions are made nationally and how having someone represent their local area can make a difference to everyday life.
During the visit, Julia held an assembly for Year 6 pupils. The pupils were highly engaged and asked a range of thoughtful questions about the MP’s background, how she began her career in politics, what her role involves, and her hopes for the future. Julia spoke about why she chose to become an MP, the responsibility that comes with the role, and how much she values representing the local area and being a voice for the community.
Julia Lopez said: “I visited Drapers’ Brookside today as part of UK Parliament Week. I want local children to understand more about how Parliament works - how they are represented, what Westminster means to them, and how I work to represent their views and needs. It is always a pleasure to come to Drapers’ Brookside. I find it an inspirational place, full of people dedicated to learning, and the pupils always ask excellent questions.”
Executive Principal of Drapers’ Brookside Junior School, Angela Winch, said: “It's important for our children to meet their MP and understand her role. I want to thank Julia for visiting today and acknowledge the support she has provided to our school in her capacity as MP. She has visited Drapers’ Brookside on several occasions, taken time to understand the flood risk we face, and arranged for us to meet with the Early Education Minister to discuss solutions. We are very grateful for her continued engagement with our school community.”
The school thanks Julia Lopez for her visit and for supporting pupils in developing a deeper understanding of Parliament and representation.
